I have been in New York exactly in that August, 2-3 weeks before the attack. I went, of course (it use to be a must), on top of one of the Twin Towers, at 107th floor. Here you could visit a New York History Museum, state of the art. It was full with families with children, young people, etc.
We got up with some very speedy elevators. They almost took yours breather way, but everything went ok. From that point, above the city, you could reach an extraordinary round panorama of Manhattan. Who
