Romania represented all of the images that
we felt were critical to this movie–the sense of despair, emptiness and
otherworldliness that you could build on a soundstage, but it wouldn’t
be half as real. Technically, the film is set in the
American Midwest. But when you see the architecture and landscape of
Romania, it adds to that feeling of things being a little off and
creepy..
